Following the death of Mother Love Bone’s frontman Andrew Wood, his former roommate Chris Cornell approached his surviving bandmates about recording a single in tribute to Wood. Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament from Mother Love Bone and Chris Cornell were joined by Mike McCready, Matt Cameron and eventually guest vocalist Eddie Vedder. The single turned into a full album and was released under the name “Temple of the Dog” in reference to a Mother Love Bone Lyric.
Gossard, Ament, McCready and Vedder went on to form Pearl Jam, releasing their debut album Ten in 1991. Their success and the success of Soundgarden brought renewed interest in the Temple of the Dog album. Eventually three singles were released: “Hunger Strike”, “Say Hello 2 Heaven”, and “Pushin’ Forward Back” and the album achieved “platinum” status.
